Mavis Muller – Desert Says Its Name

The desert says its name slowly
as quartz and granite
are broken into sand.
The tortoise crawls away
into an ancient home.
His shell is as big as the world,
painted with pictures of the past.
The rattlesnake drinks the sun,
then curls and coils
to a resting spot
beneath a spring flowering
mesquite canopy
to listen to the music
of thousands of solitary bees.

Laurelf – Fingers and Rock

and rock
that dance
secret, sacred
“sheer naked contact”
the smell of granite and effort
the poetry of each finger hold
and quartz nub
for the toe
mica flecks
sun dizzy dance
between the hands
and the ritual
each foot and hand moving
chalks in
every few yards
and the brightly colored cord
& webbing
fantasy snake of the rock
sun on the back
breeze in hair
all muscles taut
spread eagle
hugging granite
into the Center.
